A Song For You: LDN

My song for you today comes from the new English pop rock sensation Lily Allen.

The song's name is LDN [short for 'London'] and as you will see, it fits quite neaty into this weeks' theme which is "Around the Neighborhood".

LDN:
Lil Allen

Riding through the city on my bike all day
Cause the filth took away my license
It doesn't get me down and I feel OK
Cause the sights that I'm seeing are priceless

Everything seems to look as it should
But I wonder what goes on behind doors
A fella looking dapper, but he's sitting with a slapper
Then I see it's a pimp and his crack whore

You might laugh you might frown
Walkin' round London town

[Chorus]
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

There was a little old lady, who was walking down the road
She was struggling with bags from Tesco
There were people from the city having lunch in the park
I believe that it's called al fresco
Then a kid came along to offer a hand

But before she had time to accept it
hits her over the head, doesn't care if she's dead
Cause he's got all her jewelery and wallet

You might laugh you might frown
walking round London town

[Chorus]

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

Life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life
Life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life, yeah that's city life

[Chorus x2]

[x2]
When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
You can see it's all lies

Homework: Wednesday, 28 March 2007

For Friday I'd like you to have a look 18 year old Brooke's diary on page 43 of the Textbook [click on the picture above] and do the exercise in Section C at the bottom of the page. Once you have done that, I'd like you to get together with your Language Partner and discuss the following questions:

(i) Are you interested in trends or not? Why or why not?

(ii) It is said that “companies start trends because they want to earn a lot of money”. Do you think this is true? Who starts trends?

(iii) Who are the trendsetters in Korea? How have they become so?

(iv) Why do some trends stay popular for a long time, and other quickly fade? Can you think of any examples?

As usual, people will be randomly chosen to tell us what they and their partner discussed, so, DO IT!!! (please...)

Listening Activity: Unit 4: Lesson B

Listen to these interviews on the street in New York and answer the following questions:

(i) where are there hometowns?

(ii) where are their clothes from?

(iii) What do they say their personal style is?

With your language partner, discuss how you would describe your sense of style and whether you are interested in trends in music or fashion. Discus why or why not.

Writing Activity: Unit 4: Lesson B

An activity I thought you could get involved in on a voluntary basis is the writing activity for each chapter.

The writing activity on page 45 of the Textbook this week, for example, involves writing a letter in response to a letter written to an advice column in a newspaper [click on the picture above].

What you can do, if you would like, is write a reply to same and post it anonymously [if you want] in the comments section for this posting (I will put an sample reply there). If you check back, I will try and correct what you have written.

If this works out, we can continue doing this each week for each Writing Activity in the book.

This weeks section on Pronunciation points out that in rapid speech, native speakers usually drop the final 'f' sound in 'of' before a consonant sound.

Listen to the recording here and ask yourself:

"What does of sound like when it is said fast ?"

Listen to the next recording here and see if you can complete the sentences [the answers are in the link below].

A Song For You: Get Around To It

One of may favorite groups of the 1990's was a group called Everything But The Girl. Starting off producing what was know as 'sophisto-pop' ETBTG (as they were sometimes known] had a commercial breakthrough with the song "Missing" - one of the biggest 'club/dance' records of the last twenty years.

Today's song for you is a 'sophisto-pop' song with 'club/dance' elements from one of the two members of ETBTG - Tracey Thorn.

Released this week [March 20 to be exact], I think its a great CD. Hope you enjoy.

Get Around To It
Tracey Thorn

Show me what the girl does to the boy
If you can get around to it.
Show me what the girl does.

Show me what the girl does to the boy
If you can get around to it.

Show me what d-do you most enjoy
If you can get around to it.

Learnin' more about you…
I hope it's never ever finished!
What it's like when I am
Your new toy,
If you can get around to it.

I get excited.
You get excited.
Why should you fight it?

Sex with you—
Bein' right next you—
Won't do it.
Bein' right next to you—
The two of us—
Won't do it.
Bein' so kind to me.

Message from Simon: Wednesday, 21st March 2007

Dear Friends,

Just a message to remind you that this Friday I will hand out a short questionnaire to gage your feelings about the level of the text book and the class in general. While I can't promise that there will be great changes - I am hesitant to give up on the textbook altogether - if enough of your feel that the level is too low, I will attempt to make the activities a little bit more challenging.

On another matter, as also mentioned in class this morning, I want to remind you that from this Friday people will be penalized [i.e. marks will be deducted] if they have not done the homework and / or fall asleep in class.

I realize that many of you have to stay awake late in order to do homework and/or drink and party with your friends. I also realize that it is often difficult to get out of these 'tasks'. Having said that however, it is clearly unfair that students who fall asleep in class get the same mark for participation as students who stay awake [and have also done their homework].

If it is the case that you are very very tired or feeling sick let me know before the class begins and I "will look the other way". You will however, needless to say, NOT be able to do this every week!!!

p.s. the photo is one of me in north east China. The area you can see across the river is North Korea.

Homework: Wednesday, 21 March 2007

For this Friday's class I would like you to:

1: read the The Bloody Dumbbell by Hy Conrad

2: think about who shot Jack Watkins and why.

3: on a sheet on paper write down your ideas about the crime: who do you think committed the murder and why you think it was them.

As usual, 'Volunteers' will be randomly chosen to share their views on Friday.

p.s. to find out who shot Jack Watkins [Monday's murder mystery] follow the link.

A Song For You: I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You

Today I bring you a country song. Country music is often derided for being simplistic both musically and lyrically. While this is true of some country songs, it is not true of all - as, I think, is evidenced by the song and singer I bring to you today.

The name of the song is "I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You" and the singer and writer of the song Lyle Lovett [perhaps best known for having been married to the actress Julia Roberts for a couple of years in the 1990's].

Have a close listen to the words of this one [actually you should be having a close listen to the words of all the songs I am posting!!]. One of my closest friends thinks it is one of the most truly spooky songs he has ever heard.

So just download the song through the title below and enjoy yourself.

Lyle Lovett
I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You

Its not the words
You know I'll always love you
It's not the words
I wish that I could stay
It's more the way your lips looked
As you spoke them
And how the moonlight fell upon your face
I married her just because she looks like you

And for every time you said no
She says honey I'll be glad to
And for every time you left me
She says darling I'll be there
It's not the words
You'll get over me
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you

And if I had not searched for you
I never would have found her
And if I had not loved you
I would never have known love
It's not the words
Please try to forget me
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you

And for every time you knocked me down
She reaches out to help me
And for every time you cursed me
She says darling I love you
It's not the words
Time heals everything
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you

A Song For You: A Song For You

Today's 'song for you' is, as promised last week A Song For You - the inspiration for the title of this regular posting.

Written by Leon Russell, A Song For You was a gigantic hit for the American singing duo 'The Carpenters' in the early 1970's. Popular throughout the 1970's. The Carpenters came to an end when Karen died on the 4th of February, 1983, from a cardiac arrest, caused by her anorexia.

A Song For You
The Carpenters

I've been so many places in my life and time

I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhyme

I've acted out my love in stages

With ten thousand people watching

But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me is what I hope to be

I've treated you unkindly but darlin' can't you see

There's no one more important to me

Darlin' can't you please see through me

Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing

You came out in front and I was hiding

But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together

Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there's no space or time

I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine

And when my life is over

Remember when we were together

We were alone and I was singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing

You came out in front and I was hiding

But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together

Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding

I love you in a place where there's no space or time

I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over

Remember when we were together

We were alone and I was singing this song for you

We were alone and I was singing this song for you

A Song For You: LIve With Me

Well, its Saturday night and so I suppose many of you are turning your thoughts to questions about L-O-V-E. How to get it, how to keep it or ... how to escape it.

Keeping this in mind, I'd like to dedicate today's 'song for you' to those of you in, out or smothered by L-O-V-E. The song, 'Live With Me', is a 2004 joint creation by veteran [ie. he has been around along time] folk-soul singer Terry Callier and British electronica pioneers Massive Attack.

So just lie back and enjoy it....

Terry Callier / Massive Attack
Live With Me

it don't matter where you turn gonna survive you live and learn
i been thinking 'bout you babe by the light of dawn
and midnight blue day and night i been missing you
i been thinking about you baby almost makes me crazy
come and live with me either way win or lose
when you run into trouble you live the blues
i been thinking about you babe, yeah
see it almost makes me crazy child
nothing's right when you ain't here
i'll give all that i have just to keep you near
i wrote you a letter and tried to make it clear
you just don't believe that i'm sincere
i been thinking 'bout you baby
plans and schemes hopes and fears
dreams i deny for all these years
i been thinking 'bout you babe living with me
well i been thinking 'bout you baby
makes me wanna woo-oo-hoo woo-oo-hoo
yeah child, nothing's right if you ain't here
i'll give all that i have just to keep you near
i wrote you a letter, darling try to make it clear
oh but you just don't believe that i'm sincere
thinking 'bout you baby i want you to live with me
nothing's right when you ain't here
