Our‘Song of the Week’ this week is 'Our House' which was is a single by the English ska band Madness, The song was, from their album The Rise & Fall which peaked at #5 in the UK singles chart in November 1982. Madness were formed in London in 1976 and while they were one of the most prominent bands of the late-1970s ska revival, they moved away from ska and closer towards more conventional pop music. Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line, accented guitar, or piano rhythms on the offbeat, and in some cases, jazz-like horn riffs.
