A Song for You: Star Witness

I have decided to call this contribution to the Blog "A Song For You" after one of the more famous hit songs of the early 1970's [but more of that next week]. Today's song is from one of the CD's touted as being one of the best of last year, 'Fox Confessor Brings the Flood'. Its by American singer-songwriter Neko Case and has been chosen largely because I want to try out a new way getting music to you [the Canadian connection in case you're wondering - as it's Canadian Music Week - is that Neko spent a couple of years living in Vancouver before moving back to the United States].

If everything works out the way it should, it should should play straight away if you left click and download normally if you right click [I cannot test this out right now as I am working on a Mac]. As usual, the lyrics are provided for your edification [look up the meaning in your dictionaries if you don't know it]. If you want to read the lyrics as you listen to the song, you will have to download it first.

Star Witness

Star Witness

My true love drowned in a dirty old pan
Of oil that did run from the block
Of a falcon sedan 1969
The paper said '75
There were no survivors
None found alive

Trees break the sidewalk
And the sidewalk skins my knees
There's glass in my thermos
And blood on my jeans
Nickels and dimes of the fourth of july
Roll off in a crooked line
To the chain-link lots where the red tails dive
Oh how I forgot what it's like

Hey when she sings, when she sings when she sings like she runs
Moves like she runs
Hey when she moves, when she moves when she moves like she runs
Moves like she runs
Hey there there's such tender wolves 'round town tonight
Round the town tonight
Hey there there's such tender wolves 'round town tonight
Round the town tonight

Hey pretty baby get high with me,
We can go to my sisters if we say we'll watch the baby"
The look on your face yanks my neck on the chain
And I would do anything
To see you again

So I've fallen behind:

Hey when she sings, when she sings when she sings like she runs
Moves like she runs
Hey when she moves, when she moves when she moves like she runs
Moves like she runs
Hey there there's such tender wolves 'round town tonight
Round the town tonight
Hey there there's such tender wolves 'round town tonight
Round the town tonight

Go on, go on scream and cry
You're miles from where anyone will find you
This is nothing new, no television crew
They don't even put on the sirens
My nightgown sweeps the pavement
Please don't let him die

Oh how I forgot...

Neko Case

Happy Birthday Ghana!!

The west African country of Ghana celebrates its 50th year of independence from Britain today and there is much revelry on the streets of its capital, Accra. Numerous world leaders are in the country to help it celebrate including South Africa's Thabo Mbeki, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Olusegun Obasanjo from Nigeria.

To read more about Ghana and its history check out the BBC web site at: Ghana-BBC

Finally, to get a taste of what will be playing in bars in Accra tonight, check out the following link to the music of “Lord Bob Cole" (who may also have been known as Bob Johnson). Cole was a Ghanaian comedian, songwriter, and actor who was a veteran of the Ghanaian Concert Party scene of the 1950’s where highlife music was mixed with comic dramatizations of local events. The link is taken from a great Blog site - Benn loxo du taccu - which showcases music from all over the African sub-continent.

Song of the Day: A Case of You

Today's song (don't worry, there won't be a song of the day every day!) is dedicated to Canadian Music Week which runs until the 10 of March.

To celebrate this grand event I have chosen a song written and sung by perhaps Canada's best singer-songwriter, Joni Mitchell.

Born Roberta Joan Anderson in Fort McLeod, Alberta, Canada, on November 7, 1943, Joni Mitchell released a string of highly influential albums in the late sixties and early seventies. Continuing to record for the next three decades, she announced her retirement in October 2002.

Today's song - one of her most famous - is entitled 'A Case Of You' and comes from her 1971 album 'Blue'. Appropriately it is a song dealing with her love of Canada. Expect more [recent] songs from Canadian artists over the next week.

A Case Of You

Joni Mitchell:
A Case Of You

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constant in the darkness
Wheres that at?
If you want me Ill be in the bar

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada
Oh canada
And your face sketched on it twice

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh Id still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
Im frightened by the devil
And Im drawn to those ones that aint afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
Love is touching souls
Surely you touched mine
Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
Still Id be on my feet
And still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Color go to him, stay with him if you can
Oh but be prepared to bleed
Oh but you are in my blood youre my holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter, bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still Id be on my feet
Id still be on my feet

Mmmmmmm

Song of the Day: Anchorage

Given that many of you were born in the late 1980's I thought I would post a song that was released in 1988 and became a (minor) hit in 1989. The song is called "Anchorage' and the singer responsible for it is Michelle Shocked. Michelle Shocked was born Michelle Johnston in Dallas, TX, in 1962, where she spent her early childhood traveling around army bases. She released her first album in 1988 and continues to record until today.

Anchorage

Anchorage

I took the time to write to my old friend
I walked across that burning bridge
I mailed my letter off to Dallas but
Her reply came from Anchorage, Alaska

She said Hey girl its about time you wrote
Its been over two years now my old friend
Take me back to the days of the foreign telegrams
And the all night rock'n rollin' hey Chel
We was wild then

Hey Chel you know its kinda funny
Texas always seems so big
But you know youre in the largest State in the Union
When youre anchored down in Anchorage

Hey girl I think the last time I saw you
Was on me and Leroys wedding day
What was the name of that
Love song you played

I forgot how it goes
I dont recall how it goes

Leroy got a better job so we moved
Kevin lost a tooth, hes starting school
I got a brand new eight month old baby girl
I sound like a housewife
I think I'm a housewife

Hey girl whats it like to be in New York
New York City imagine that
Whats it like to be a skateboard punk rocker
Leroy says send a picture
Leroy says hello
Leroy says keep on rocking girl
Yeh keep on rocking

Michelle Shocked

An Experiment

From time to time I hope to be able to post English songs on this site along with the lyrics and some information about the artist. I'm not sure yet whether this will be possible but its worth a try.

As an experiement, I am posting a song by the English group Splinter. Splinter was a group formed in 1974 and played bright sunny pop music very much in the Beatles mode. They disbanded in 1984. The song I am (trying) to post today is off their first album and was produced by George Harrison of the Beatles in 1974. Hope you enjoy it!

Costafine Town

Splinter
Costafine Town

Dirty old hole in the side of the road
For the man who cleans the streets
Opened up doors where the working class goes at night
Written on walls where the cats have a crawl
For the grass along the top
Man I was born there, I'm gonna walk right back

Costafine town, it's a fine town
I'm coming home
I feel so lonely, I been too long away
Costafine town, it's a fine town
I'm coming home
I wish I'd never made up my mind to stray

Nobody owns all the dirty old clothes
That are lying in the lane
Whistling loud before their shift has gone
Little old man with the pole in his hand
Lighting lamps along the way
Hurry me back there, I wish I'd never gone

Costafine town, it's a fine town
I'm coming home
I feel so lonely, I been too long away
Costafine town, it's a fine town
I'm coming home
I wish I'd never made up my mind to stray ....

Welcome to Simon's English Room

Welcome to Simon's English Room. While this Blog is primarily intended for my students at KAIST - the Korean Advanced Institute for Science and Technology - anyone is welcome to read it.

While I cannot promise that I will write something everyday, hopefully the Blog will be regularly updated with information related both to my classes at KAIST and to learning English generally.

This is the first time I have set up a Blog so expect the unexpected for a while. With any luck, I will get the hang of it eventually, and be able to use this medium to help you help yourselves improve your English.

For now, be good and happy,

best wishes,

Simon
