Malvina Reynolds in 1962 that, as the cititaion in Wikipedia noes: “… lampoons the development of suburbia and what many consider its bourgeois conformist values”. The song’s best-known version of the song is the one by
Pete Seeger and the song is thought to have been “inspired” by Daly City in California. More recently, the song has been featured in the television comedy series
Weeds. While the first season used Reynolds’ own recording of the song, the second had a different versions every week including ones by: Elvis Costello, Death Cabbie for Cutie, Regina Spektor, The Submarines, Jenny Lewis and Englebert Humperdink
